Post-Drying Cleanup for Brigantine Homes

Many Brigantine homeowners mistakenly believe that when a house gets dried successfully that this is where restoration and recovery work end. Our SERVPRO professionals have always gone above and beyond for our customers and their properties to make it “Like it never even happened.” This commitment means that there is a considerable volume of post-drying work to get done, including the cleaning of surfaces, contents, and affected areas of the house.

Cleaning up after a water loss incident might not seem complicated, but depending on the length of exposure time and the migration path of the damage, water cleanup in Brigantine homes could require multiple tools and products to complete. Much of the necessary work has been well documented and scoped as the drying efforts progressed by our crew chief. Using software like DryBook, we can monitor the progress of moisture removal and catalog damages that still must get addressed.

Residue Removal
Standing water can produce residues from any substance or contaminant that gets into that pooling thread. Once we have extracted surface water and utilized air movers and other drying tools to protect exposed materials, the surfaces of these construction elements might still show damage with the present residues. Agitative cleaning can break soils loose and wipe them clean with the use of our potent cleaning products.

Construction Cleaning
There are many instances where reconstruction might be necessary after a water loss incident, and our SERVPRO team can help with both in-house contractors to complete the work, and the pre-job cleaning and debris removal after the work gets done.

Content Management
The contents of your home are a valuable addition to the residence, and what makes a structure your own. Protecting these belongings might seem overwhelming or impossible when water damage is bad enough, but our team has effective on-site and off-site cleaning practices to protect these possessions whenever possible.

Cleaning is a vital component of the full restoration package that we offer our customers after a water loss. Whenever you need help after a disaster, you can reach our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team 24/7 at (609) 965-0885.

How SERVPRO Handles Water Damage to Atlantic City Hardwood Floors

1/21/2020 (Permalink)

Wet Wood Flooring No matter when you make the call, we have technicians who can assist you.

Properly Caring For Water Damaged Hardwood Floors In Atlantic City

When homeowners install hardwood flooring in their homes, it is an investment in both the look and durability. One of the biggest things they fear is water damage occurring. However, it is a fallacy that when this type of flooring receives exposure to water, it is an automatic loss.

SERVPRO techs routinely handle water damage to Atlantic City properties, including the restoration of hardwood flooring. There are crucial elements in determining the success, namely the length of time the flooring received exposure to water and how quickly cleanup efforts began.

The Clock is Ticking on Damage

SERVPRO technicians know every minute the hardwood boards are in elevated moisture conditions, the more the full restoration potential gets diminished. When scoping the flooring, they look for signs such as crowning or cupping. The moisture detection equipment can also tell the techs if the subfloor requires drying.

Removal and Reinstallation

In cases where the subfloor requires drying, with their general contractor license HIC #13VH05086500, the techs have the certification and experience to carefully remove the floorboards for drying and restoration for potential reinstallation.

Specialized Drying for Hardwood

Because wood holds moisture, it requires direct drying methods for the best outcome. SERVPRO technicians frequently rely on drying mats, which lay flat on the flooring and push warm, dry air into the wood. This assists in drying the boards in an expedited manner and lessens the potential for loss. Another common tactic for drying large areas of hardwood is covering the area in plastic and holding it in place with sandbags. This application forces the air in a direct area and speeds the drying process.

Post-Mitigation Actions

Once the floor verifies as dry, if there are any signs of warping, SERVPRO techs can sand and restain the floor if the homeowner chooses to have this done.

SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton at (609) 965-0885 for cleanup and restoration of your home from any size water damage. The certified techs arrive quickly and make the loss in your property, "Like it never even happened."

Wall Cavity Hazards After Atlantic City Water Damage

More than ever, construction of homes in Atlantic City features a minimalistic appearance where all of the plumbing, electrical wiring, and other utilities get tucked and hidden neatly in the walls. When water loss incidents occur within one of these wall cavities, technicians must work cautiously to prevent any exposure to additional hazards. With a need for controlled demolition when materials like drywall have become exposed to moisture and water losses for more than 24 hours, the standard practices for removing these damaged elements could present risks to our SERVPRO contractors.

Assessing any risks and hazards is a vital element of the initial job inspection when our crew chief meets with customers to estimate the costs of restoring water damage in Atlantic City homes. While emergency services are happening at this time, such as severing the supply of water to this damaged portion of plumbing and potentially extraction in the main floor areas of your residence, determining the potential for encountering other utilities or threats during demolition is vital to protecting our team and the occupants of the house.

Utilities are among the most pressing concerns of our professionals and contractors, as cutting into electrical wiring or even an unexpected natural gas line could have disastrous consequences. We do all demolition with caution and care, whether sawing through drywall or breaking down entire panels with the use of sledgehammers. Uncalculated demolition can lead to injuries or more significant damage to a customer’s home.

We also must assess the risks of encountering hazardous materials within the walls used as insulation in the past, such as asbestos. The protocols to handle these threats varies significantly from traditional insulation removal, so we cannot use air movers or other drying equipment against these exposed wall cavities until the threat of asbestos can or has already gotten ruled out entirely.

Cleaning and drying your home after a water loss incident is something that must happen as quickly as possible to limit the ultimate need for demolition and reconstruction. We have certified water removal restorers and licensed general contractors, General Contractor License #: HIC #13VH05086500, to help with both of these phases to get you back into your home as quickly as possible. Give our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team a call today at (609) 965-0885.

Technicians Apply Thermodynamics To Water Removal In Your Folsom Area Home

10/30/2019 (Permalink)

Standing water in a room with a couch and lamp. Call SERVPRO today, we have your Folsom home covered from water damage.

Our SERVPRO ways will keep you on top of your Folsom water damage.

Nature itself seeks equilibrium after a flood occurs in your Folsom home – this is the second law of thermodynamics. While that statement may sound complicated, all you need to do is understand a few basic rules to make removing water a less complicated task.

Anyone can put these laws into practice when applying them to water removal on your Folsom area property. Remember, the air in the environment holds less moisture than wet materials, making outside air a significant contributor to drying practices used by technicians performing your restoration.

  • Wet goes to Dry.
  • Hot goes to Cold.
  • High Pressure goes to Low Pressure.

Think about these laws in terms of drying different contents or structural components in your home. If the air itself is dryer than the materials, as wet goes to dry, moisture moves naturally from wet contents into drier air.

Technicians from SERVPRO calculate thirst by comparing the gross primary productivity (GPP) in the air to the Relative Humidity (RH) level to GPP average the air could hold if fully saturated (100% RH). The greater the difference, the higher the amount of thirst, the higher the rate at which evaporation may occur. Sounds technical? It is, but very necessary for successful drying of a room without causing “inside rain.” Dehumidifiers are a SERVPRO tech’s best friends.

Moisture Content: This is the percentage of moisture in materials compared to the weight of the material when completely dry (oven-dried). Here we find what percentage of the material contains moisture.

Example – If a piece of wet wood has a 10% moisture content reading, 10 pounds of water should be present in 100 pounds of wood.

The moisture meters used by SERVPRO technicians also include a relative scale. Because we dry more than just wood, we use a wood moisture equivalent to determine moisture content levels when dealing with different materials found in your home.

Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC): Is the condition of a material, after stabilizing moisture content compared to the relative humidity or temperature of the surrounding air.

Example - A professional carpenter uses EMC in their daily lives, allowing materials to sit within a structure, up to 2wks, before installation. It allows wood an opportunity to normalize, preventing shrinkage, or expansion after installation.

SERVPRO technicians use these methods every day, performing a variety of water removal and drying services to ensure equilibrium in several materials found in your home after a flood. For example, with soaked hardwood flooring boards, a monitored and consistent drying rate is needed to prevent splitting or cracking. Sometimes, slower is better.

Our Experts Discuss How To Protect Your Atlantic City Home From Water Damage

8/5/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can lead to widespread flooding in your home. Call the professionals at SERVPRO today for remediation assistance.

The Threats of a Wet Atlantic City Basement

Wet basements present multiple layers of threats to Atlantic City residents. With so many homes featuring this subterranean level encased with concrete and masonry units, property owners are continually combatting excessive moisture and dampness in this lower level of their house. A powerful and frequent source of these situations is water leeching through blockwork and concrete flooring from the slow deterioration of these elements or through hydrostatic pressure in surrounding saturated earth. Both of these scenarios can be challenging to resolve without experience and the right products.

Water damage in Atlantic City basements is a compromising situation for the entire household, as moisture concerns can continually worsen until it has affected the supports and subflooring of the main level of the property. With wood joists and beams being the foundation for the entire home, protecting these structural elements from degradation and deterioration is critical. This response can not only better protect the property and its occupants, but can also help to save money on the costs of restoration. Our SERVPRO professionals have the skills and expertise to help.

Among the chief concerns with a wet basement is the development of mold. Colonies can flourish within 2-3 days of persistent moist, dark, and poorly ventilated conditions. Our SERVPRO professionals can work to reduce the presence of these colonies by spraying antimicrobial agents to coat surfaces and eliminate mold spores. If seepage continues to be a threat to this lower level, our professionals might also recommend the installation of sump pumps or other water and moisture regulating tools.

Material degradation is another primary concern with a wet basement, and one that many homeowners might not know how to remedy on their own. The technicians we dispatch to your property understand how a more significant breach in your blockwork or concrete can lead to widespread flooding in the right conditions, so we meticulously inspect the basement for any cracks and penetration points and repair them through multiple approaches including the application of hydraulic cement.

You cannot hope to contend with a wet basement if you do not know that you have one. The first line of defense for your home is you, and our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team is standing by to help however you need. Give us a call at (609) 965-0885.

Cleaning Up Water-Damaged Drywall In Brigantine Homes

Many construction materials in your Brigantine home do not have the strength of composition to stand up against direct water exposure for very long. Many of the most common structural pieces get chosen based on their lower price, and as a result, these same materials are much weaker. Drywall and sheetrock materials are staples of modern construction, but also among the first to fail when exposed to direct moisture and water. The degradation of these materials can leave a substantial mess, but our professionals can help.

There are many phases of water cleanup in Brigantine, and this is among the first responses that your home needs once a water loss incident has stopped. Our SERVPRO professionals can appreciate how critical a fast response is to limit the damage to your drywall and other construction materials, though saving it entirely might be impossible if the loss incident was widespread. The saturation of sheetrock can be challenging to overcome and to remedy, and there are more cost-effective and time-saving solutions available to our team.

With any loss incident, our professionals must assess the full scope of the damage and what materials have gotten affected by the moving water. Once our experts know where the highest concentrations of moisture exist, as well as the range of the damage, our experts can set up our drying equipment and begin attempting to restore what elements can get preserved. For drywall, however, portions near the flooring often must get removed due to oversaturation. In as little as 24-48 hours, drywall can bloat and begin falling apart.

The removal of affected areas of drywall is a cost-effective solution for homeowners, as this only addresses, the portions saturated by the loss incident. Our SERVPRO professionals and our contractors can reconstruct these removed sections once the moisture and dampness throughout the residence have gotten sufficiently addressed.

Water cleanup can mean multiple things for your damaged home. Our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team of restoration specialists can utilize our extensive training and our team of licensed contractors to make these threats “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (609) 965-0885.

Our Skilled Professionals Can Eliminate The Effects Of Water Damage To Your Home In Atlantic City

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

If you need our experience to help restore your home, call us today at (609) 965-0885 to find out exactly how.

Eliminating The Effects Of Water Damage To Atlantic City Homes

Despite being nearly encircled by an ocean Atlantic City residents usually, find themselves walking on a wet carpet soaked by a split water line rather than a hurricane.

For SERVPRO restoration teams, Atlantic City water damage involves standing water and soaked property in the home. That means our personnel needs to stop further water intrusion, remove water from the home, and eliminate, or at least reduce, the effects that water has on furniture.

To begin with, our technicians find the source of the leak and stop it. For a broken appliance, that means shutting off the water leading into the dishwasher, refrigerator, or even a water heater when the high level, shut-off valve fails. If there is a major plumbing problem, the team leader recommends the homeowner bring in a licensed plumber to make repairs.

Next, SERVPRO specialists use pumps and smaller extraction devices to draw outstanding water. The smaller devices are especially effective to remove water trapped in carpets and floors. Our teams can usually clear out a home in one or two days.

As specialists remove the water, others begin work on restoring furniture and other items. For items like dining room chairs, the excess water can affect the veneer, causing it to run or dissolve off the wood. To prevent that, team members remove items to another room, outside, or even to our facility.

If the veneer or other finish is only soft but has not begun to run or dissolve, we can return the chairs to their original condition by installing fans around the property and increasing airflow to dry them. In cases where there are only a couple of very small water spots present after drying, technicians can often eliminate them with a dry cloth and a restoration polish. For large or many spots of damage, the team leader recommends sending the item to a professional furniture restoration service.

As a locally owned business, SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton is here to support not simply our customers, but our friends and neighbors. If you need our experience to help restore your home, call us today at (609) 965-0885 to find out exactly how.

Is Your Atlantic City Tub Raining Water Damage Inside the Bathroom?

4/26/2019 (Permalink)

Bathrooms contain a lot of plumbing. Inspect the plumbing regularly for signs of water damage.

Hidden Leaks Can Mean Severe Water Damage in Atlantic City

Life gets busy, and Atlantic City homeowners might overlook warning signs that plumbing or overflows allow water to overreach in one or more bathrooms. Something as simple as a shower curtain billowing as the spray hits it or an overly enthusiastic bathtime ritual with splash-happy toddlers can send water onto the floor of a bathroom daily. Behind the walls or under the vanity pipes can spring tiny leaks. All seems fine until the ceiling below stains or cracks.

Even small amounts of moisture can cause water damage to your Atlantic City home over time. Inadequate caulking or frequent spills eventually permit water to reach structural components of your home. Slow leaks that puddle under a cabinet eventually break through, soaking the drywall or ceiling tiles underneath. Water also takes unexpected paths, with damage showing itself far from the site of the leak or spill.

Our crews have seen many water damage scenarios and are experts at tracing the harm back to the source. Once SERVPRO arrives on the scene, an experienced manager assesses the visible damage and then uses sensitive moisture monitoring tools to find all building materials involved. Thermal imaging is useful to map out areas where water collects in building cavities.

Bathrooms might seem immune to water damage because of the materials used to protect from moisture. SERVPRO often finds tile floors and walls that have cracked or eroded grout risk saturating the subfloor or backer board if specialized strategies are not used to remove residual water thoroughly. Seals along the joints of fixtures such as tubs, shower stalls, and toilets can fail, and the supply and waste pipes can allow condensation or tiny cracks to soak walls, floors, and ceilings.

Once SERVPRO maps out the damage, our IICRC-trained crews devise ways to expose the wet areas and release any standing water for removal. High-efficiency air movers and heaters force moisture out of building materials and into the air as vapor allowing dehumidifiers to capture and contain the water for disposal. We ensure all wet materials return to normal moisture readings, ready for additional restoration efforts.

SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton has the trained technicians and powerful equipment to dry out the water damaged spaces in your home. Call us at (609) 965-0885 for an evaluation.

Flood Facts

7/6/2017 (Permalink)

The summer months bring tropical storms and hurricanes, which also brings a greater risk for flood damage and water losses. Here are some facts about floods to help raise awareness and hopefully help you prevent, or at least limit, any damage a flood might cause.

A flood is a high flow of water for a prolonged period of time, often caused by heavy rain from a thunderstorm, tropical storm, hurricane, or derecho.

Flash floods are quick rising floods caused by heavy rains over a short period of time. These can be very dangerous, as they often have enough power to sweep away trees and vehicles, causing immense damage. Pay attention to flash flood warnings and have an emergency plan in place.

Coastal flooding is a big issue this time of year in our area. Coastal flooding is the result of strong onshore winds pushing on water from the ocean or bay. These can be classified as storm surges and greatly affect homes along the coast. Raising a home may help prevent flooding.

SERVPRO® of Atlantic City/Hamilton/Hammonton specializes in restoring any water/flood related losses. Give us a call at 609-965-0885 following your water loss for a free inspection and estimate by our professionally trained staff.

Some Tips to Prevent Water Damage to your Home or Business.

4/14/2017 (Permalink)

  1. Be careful where you plant

Some plants and trees, have pretty invasive roots. If you’re not careful, they’ll grow right into your sprinkler system, drainage field, pipes, and septic tanks. Plan before you plant to keep roots away from any water lines.

  1. Clean out roof gutters

You know it’s on your to-do list anyway, so if you can, take a safe climb up to your roof and check out your gutters. If you’re seeing lots of leaves, birds’ nests, sticks, and whatnot up there, your gutters may not be doing the job you hired them for. And on a rainy day, a clogged gutter can send water spilling into your home’s foundation, through the roof, or down to your basement.

  1. Keep an eye on your water bill

With so many water pipes hidden behind walls and in the floors in your house, you might not know there’s a leak until the damage is done. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your monthly water bill. If you see it starting to creep up, or get one that’s uncommonly high, it’s a pretty good sign that you may have a leak somewhere.  This is even more important if it is a second home that is not always occupied.

  1. Use a drain snake instead of unclogging chemicals

No matter how crazy clean you are, from your shower to your kitchen sink, clogs are going to happen. And chances are at some point in your life you’ve used one of those powerful chemical drain cleaners to get things moving again. But as convenient as they may be, most folks don’t realize those caustic chemicals are also eating away at their pipes.  If you rely on them a lot, you could be setting yourself up for leaks. That’s why owning a drain snake is a good solution to clear away clogs.

  1. Never pour grease down your sink

You’ve probably heard this before, but you should definitely avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. It doesn’t matter if you flush it with hot or cold water. It can still congeal and cling to your pipes, and could still cause some serious damage and blockage.

Some people use detergent to break up grease before pouring it down the drain…and that may help sometimes. But there’s no guarantee that it’ll keep the grease from sticking to your pipes, so why take the risk?

The safest thing to do is just to pour your grease in an empty can, and either let it sit or put it in the refrigerator. Once it hardens you can toss it in the trash and get rid of it. Done and done.

Flooded Basement Cleanup and Restoration!

2/15/2017 (Permalink)

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your Atlantic City, Galloway, Mays Landing, Absecon or Hammonton basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe

  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home

  • Storm sewer backup

  • Sanitary sewer backup

  • Foundation drainage failure

  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

  • And many more

    Coldest Air of the Winter

    2/10/2016 (Permalink)

This weekend will bring the coldest temperatures of the season to our region.  The combination of low temperatures and gusty winds will increase the risk of frozen pipes.  See tips for preventing frozen pipes listed below:

  • Pipes in attics, exterior walls and crawl spaces are most vulnerable to extreme cold.
  • Check on all vacant units.
  • Simply turning off the water is not sufficient for a property that is to be left unoccupied for a long period - a lot of water is still in the system, and can cause damage.  To remove the risk completely, have a plumber drain down the water and central heating system.  Or alternatively, be sure the heat is on and set to at least 55 degrees.
  • If you go on vacation, leave the heat on, and set to at least 55 degrees.
  • Locate your water main in the event you need to shut it off in an emergency.
  • Drain all garden hoses.
  • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes.
  • While you can't change the weather, you can minimize some of winter's biggest threats to your property.  With some sensible planning you can avoid surprises this winter.

    Winter Weather Returns

    1/12/2016 (Permalink)

A piece of the polar vortex will help spread arctic air across the central and eastern United States through the midweek, bringing the coldest air of the season to many.

"The polar vortex will shift southward across Canada and set up near Hudson Bay for a several-day stint during the second full week of January," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.

Temperatures will likely peak 10 to 20 F below normal across the Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes for a couple of days this week. Temperatures may not escape the single digits through the middle of the week in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

The polar vortex is a permanent atmospheric feature that exists near the poles. At times, it can weaken and be displaced during the winter, sending waves of arctic air farther south away from the poles.

While waves of cold like this are not uncommon during the month of January, it may come as a shocker for some due to the warm end to 2015 thanks in part to El Niño.

For those that haven't dug out the winter clothing already, this round of cold air will require several layers, especially for those heading outside for an extended period of time.

What to do until help arrives.

    Spring storms can bring flooding

While Spring is a beautiful time of year, it can also produce large amounts of rain in a short amount of time. Be SERVPRO® ready; know the difference between a Flood Watch and a Flood Warning. Flood/Flash Flood Watch-Flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area. Flood/Flash Flood Warning-Flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area.
