Six Tips for Summer Accident and Disaster Preparedness

Six Tips for Summer Accident and Disaster Preparedness

The days are growing longer and warmer on the Atlantic coast. That means tourism season – and hurricane season – are almost upon us. Summer 2022 is predicted to be record breaking both in terms of travel and significant weather events. Whether you are concerned about slips and falls or a Category 5 storm, below are six tips to help mitigate potential harm to your business, your employees, and your customers when disaster strikes:

Assess your risks. First, identify the potential risks and hazards specific to your business. Think about your location, layout, operations, and clientele. For example, is your building in a flood zone? Do you stock food subject to spoilage? Is your establishment kid-friendly? Considering your business’s particular attributes will go a long way in helping you prepare for any accidents that may occur.

Make a plan. Next, create written policies and procedures tailored to the risks and hazards identified. Stress caused by emergency situations can affect decision making and judgment. Having a written plan can dramatically reduce chaos and confusion, saving property, equipment, and lives. Periodically review the policies with your employees, and revise them if necessary.

Train your employees. Employees must be familiar with and trained regularly on the policies and procedures in place. Depending on the type of risk involved, it may be beneficial to run simulations or drills. Every employee should know their roles and responsibilities in a time of crisis.

Document, document, document. Proper recordkeeping is essential to risk management. Maintain records of employee training. Record incidents when they occur so you can appropriately evaluate your policies and decide if they need updating. Consider taking photographs and/or videos of your establishment so you are prepared if you need to file an insurance claim.

Safeguard information. It is vital to ensure sensitive business records and customer information stay protected. With cybersecurity threats on the rise, make sure your technology is up to date. Use different passwords for different accounts. Instruct your employees not to open suspicious emails or attachments. Separate your public Wi-Fi network from the business Wi-Fi. Enlist the help of an IT professional if needed. As your SERVPRO Franchise Professional about our Emergency Ready Profile program (“ERP”). A free assessment of your property designed to serve as a quick reference of important building and contact information. It provides the critical information needed to begin mitigation and recovery services. It's the best way to be "Ready for whatever happens."

Check your insurance. Confirm you have proper insurance coverage. Commercial property insurance can cover damage to your building and its contents due to a fire or storm. Flood insurance can cover losses caused by flooding. Liability insurance can protect you if an allegation is made against you by an injured patron. Are your employees covered by workers’ compensation insurance if they are injured on the job? Cyber insurance can also help protect you in the event of a cyberattack.

The above is by no means a complete list of everything that you can do to prepare for an accident or disaster; however, considering these steps can give you a start for deciding what your business needs and help prevent further loss or injury in the event of a disaster.

What Actions Mitigate Flood Damage in Atlantic City Residences?

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

Flood and storm damage restoration is a job for SERVPRO. We will be on-site within 4 hours of the initial call.

Flooding can be a devastating force, requiring multiple emergency services to protect Atlantic City properties.

Mitigating flood damage is critical to area homes and businesses, as this ultimately reduces the money spent for restoration and the time these actions take. Specific emergency services can significantly impact the post-flooding condition and keep contents from becoming irreparably harmed.

Water Removal Services Expose Hazards

As with nearly all residential or commercial flood damage in Atlantic City, initial actions to reduce the severity and impact of pooling water require extraction. We use the initial job scoping to determine the best water removal tools to complete the tasks, namely, the ones capable of handling several inches of standing water with solids present.

Bulk Material Removal and Muck-Out Cleaning

Flooding can be destructive to the structural integrity of exposed areas of a house, leading to the collapse of materials like drywall and ceiling systems. Muck-out cleaning can remove these bulk materials and debris to make the final stages of restoration more efficient and thorough.

Content Relocation and Cleaning

Relocating contents and belongings from damaged areas can be a vital initial step in preventing greater harm and the spread of hazardous flooding effects. We have experienced technicians available at our nearby SERVPRO facility for focused deodorization, drying, surface cleaning, and storage when on-site cleaning is not feasible.

Flooding can be one of the most challenging disasters to overcome, especially when homes get struck with little warning. As leading restoration professionals, we can help customers navigate this stressful time to make smart decisions in restoring and protecting their property. Our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team is standing by 24/7 at (609) 965-0885.

Is Professional Water Cleanup Necessary for Atlantic City Properties?

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO techs use the latest technology and equipment for every water damage restoration service. Call now!

There are multiple advantages to choosing professional water restoration for Atlantic City residences.

It is not uncommon for property owners to want to clean up water damage on their own, but this is not always advisable. In many situations, the migration of water damage can pose substantial threats to the property when occupants lack the sophisticated equipment and training to overcome moisture pockets that deteriorate building materials or facilitate mold growth.

A Fast Response Amid the Crisis

One of the distinct advantages of professional water restoration companies in Atlantic City properties is the fast response to developing emergencies. With situations like appliance failures or burst pipes, damage effects can quickly get out of control. Our SERVPRO professionals have 24/7 availability to provide efficient mitigation and restoration solutions necessary.

Content Preservation and Cleaning

Protecting what matters most amid water damage situations can also be a reason to choose professional restoration options. Our SERVPRO team prioritizes the cleaning and safe storage of your personal belongings and contents to prevent unnecessary irreparable harm. When restoration is complete, these items can be returned to their original places.

Thorough Drying and Monitoring Processes

Clearing out the moisture from exposed materials and contents requires multiple drying tools and products to promote evaporation. An advantage of professional water clean-up is monitoring the removal of moisture and damp pockets to ensure that these issues do not persist. Monitoring the removal of hidden water caches prevents secondary effects like mold growth. Some tools for this include:

Water restoration requires skilled professionals working quickly to resolve active threats before the situation worsens. With how fast water damage effects can spread through a residence or office, our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team is a trusted name to mitigate loss. We are available 24/7 at (609) 965-0885.

Why Should Mold Damage Cleanup Only Be Handled by Professionals in Hamilton Township?

9/3/2021 (Permalink)

Mold will cause health effects if not handled properly. SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians are trained and ready for any size disaster.

SERVPRO’s Mold Damage Team Ensures Your Hamilton Township Home is Cleaned Safely and Efficiently!

Not every Hamilton Township homeowner will know that black mold is never something they should disrupt or try to clean independently. Often, people see small patches of mold growth and think to grab spray cleaner or bleach to wipe or scrub it away. Unfortunately, this dislodges microscopic mold spores that become airborne and bring the potential for health effects. Rather than taking risks inside your home, SERVPRO has a team dedicated to the safe and efficient cleaning that you need to address any areas where mold might be colonizing in your home.

Why is SERVPRO the answer when it comes to mold remediation? Our IICRC-certified team uses advanced technology to provide our clients with incredible results as quickly as possible. We know that you do not want to experience lengthy disruptions in your home life, so we get to work fast to eradicate the problem. Some of the services our mold specialists provide include:

  • Set up of mold inspections and testing
  • Detailed mold removals and remediation
  • Remediation verification after the project is complete
  • Water damage inspections to pinpoint and address the cause of the mold infestation
  • Sanitization and odor removal
  • Controlled demolition in any areas where materials get deemed unsalvageable

Whether you need to address attic mold or call us for bathroom mold removal, ensuring moisture is addressed is crucial. If you had moisture within the walls or lurking under surfaces, our applied structural drying (ASD) technicians implement our proven methods to dry all areas so that relative humidity (RH) within the zone gets restored to normal.

Why is mold damage restoration better with SERVPRO of Atlantic City/Hamilton/Hammonton? We will never wrap up the project until we know that your home is back in pre-mold condition for you and your family. Call us at (609) 965-0885.

Why Should Hamilton Property Owners Call SERVPRO to Handle Flood Damage?

8/16/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO will be on-site within 4 hours of the initial call. Storm damage restoration is a job for us!

SERVPRO Saves Hamilton Residents Time and Money When Addressing the Fallout of Flood Damage

Storms can roll through the Hamilton area at any time, and you could get hit with flash flooding without warning. Even if your property has a sump pump, you could end up with basement flooding or water intrusion throughout your ground floor. Rather than trying to grab a wet/dry vacuum to pull up water, you need skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) on the job to get it done faster. SERVPRO handles water remediation with proven methods so that you are not left with standing water that can lead to significant secondary damage or mold growth.

Why SERVPRO for Flood Damage in Hamilton? We’re Available 24/7!

Any water damage should never get ignored. Day or night, if you have flooding, you need water removal services at your door as soon as possible to get started. Water migration could lead to hidden moisture. This hidden moisture can make the restoration process even more time-consuming and difficult. We approach each flood restoration in Hamilton with care and precision, including:

  • Detailed assessment to determine all areas of water infiltration and the level of contamination in the water.
  • Board up and tarping services to protect your interior, if necessary.
  • Set up containment barriers to limit moisture movement and contaminant tracking to unaffected areas of your home.
  • Contents cleaning and recovery to restore versus replace whenever possible. Our team spot tests materials to ensure the best methods get chosen for cleaning.
  • Water removal services using high-powered pumps, extractors, and associated attachments.
  • Speedy drying with the help of air movers, industrial fans, and dehumidification equipment.
  • Thorough cleaning and sanitizing with the help of EPA-registered cleaning agents and antimicrobials. We leave your home Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned!

Never let flood damage sit until it turns into something devastating and costly. Contact SERVPRO of Atlantic City/Hamilton/Hammonton by calling (609) 965-0885 when you need us!

Homes in Brigantine with Water Damage Need a Professional Team to Assess the Damage, Extract Water and Perform Repairs

Flood Risks and Water Damage in Hamilton Township

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

From Casinos to Homes in Hamilton Township, SERVPRO Makes You the Winner with Water Damage Mitigation

SERVPRO Provides Water Mitigation Services for Our Hamilton Township Neighbors

Land development in Hamilton Township reflects the continually changing needs of our area. New residents moving in and growing families require an increase in the acreage needed for essential services such as electricity, water, septic, and sewer systems. Today’s township services also include more robust electrical grids for uninterrupted service and the latest in the internet and other telecommunication requirements. All of these require a more developed property which can increase flood risks.

The problem is that much of the property developed recently is former farmland and orchards. These areas are far closer to waterways than previously developed land, which means developers have to cover the areas with impervious surfaces, i.e., concrete and asphalt, making them Urban Use Lands. This increases the volume of stormwater runoff that contains pollutants that contaminate nearby streams and other bodies of water, as well as the homes and businesses in the pathway of the floodwater. Adding to the land pollution also given over for transportation, recreational, industrial, and commercial use needed to support each new residential development.

Over 59 percent of the Hamilton Township municipality is comprised of Urban Use Land, with the majority of that used for residential properties. Of that number, approximately 30 to 35 percent is considered covered with an impervious surface.

Natural Counters to Effects of Hamilton Township Urban Use Lands

Forests, open water, riparian zones, and wetlands make up over 31 percent of Hamilton Township. These areas are Natural Lands and have far fewer amounts of impervious surfaces than Urban Use Lands as they do not have residential areas or accompanying infrastructure requirements.

Also, these natural areas help mitigate the negative effects caused by stormwater. For example, wetlands are superb environments for an extensive number of plant, insect, and animal species. They are exceptional habitats since they both process nutrients and store them more efficiently than other natural or man-made environments. It is these nutrients that preserve existing vegetation and wildlife and also provide the food and energy source for growth. Forests filter pollutants that can improve water quality. They also serve as a brake to slow stormwater flooding, which not only protects vegetation and wildlife but residential areas as well.

Destruction of Natural Lands Leads to Additional Threats

Destruction of Natural Use Lands has led to extensive changes in the hydrological environments around Hamilton Township. Clearing vegetation and fragmenting the landscape for development alter natural watersheds, placing other Natural Use and Urban Use Lands under threat whenever there is a severe storm. Five major effects were identified as far back as 1994 on the hydrology (the branch of science concerned with the earth's water, especially its movement with land) of the Hamilton Township Natural Use Lands.

  • A larger amount of precipitation is converted to surface runoff
  • Precipitation is converted to surface runoff at a faster rate
  • Elevated peak flows in streams
  • Decreased low flow in streams due to reduced groundwater storage input
  • Degraded stream water quality

These hydrological effects are considered the results of Urban Land Use development actions. These actions include draining, ditching, diking, damming, and filling of wetlands to create more stable, dry landmasses for further impervious surfaces to build everything from roads to single-family homes.

The increased impervious surfaces of asphalt and concrete reduce and even prevent natural precipitation (rain) from properly infiltrating and being absorbed by the soil. For example, highways and parking lots have much higher surface runoff velocity rates than a forest floor, a meadow, or a wetland. The runoff volume is also larger, indicating that surface and shallow subsurface storage is more reduced than it is on Natural Use Lands. This volume further reduces lower long-term groundwater recharge and the subsequent groundwater discharge during periods of baseflow in droughts, which can cause the following:

  • Increased pollutants cause a decline in water quality
  • Decreased water levels degrade Riparian Habitats
  • Interference with navigable waterways

Other negative impacts of increased impervious surfaces include the increased volume of water and levels of soil and associated contaminants, which flow through the Natural Use watershed. Improperly managed runoff is the equivalent of a six-lane highway when it comes to transporting pollutants such as bacteria, fertilizers, and debris such as trees washed out by ditching and draining. All of these are eventually washed directly into Hamilton Township creeks, streams, and their tributaries, contaminating the surface water.

Flooding Is Not the Only Threat to Hamilton Township Homes

For many homeowners, the source of water comes from inside the home. Examples include a failed appliance like a dishwasher or an inlet pipe cracked from an early frost. SERVPRO considers water from these sources clean and makes water mitigation in a Hamilton Township home less difficult since there is no manpower or resources expended to eliminate the health threat from the pollutants in stormwater.

Mitigation specialists immediately begin using water pumps and smaller extraction devices to draw water out of each residence. Many water mitigation projects do not require heavy-duty equipment, but mops, buckets, squeegee, and elbow grease. As they remove the water, other team members begin discarding debris. In a very short time, water destroys everything paper-based, from books to photographs. While some items can be saved from disposal, any attempt at restoration must be made by a professional service.

Preserving wood furniture can be accomplished easier, but it depends on the material. Hardwoods handle water better than composites like fiberboard, but once specialists quickly set up a combination of air movers and exhaust fans, most items can be preserved. If needed, they can also set up dehumidifiers to reduce the threat of not just wood cracking and splitting but also preserve the varnish and other finishes.

No matter if it is a sudden thunderstorm or a split inlet pipe, you need professional restoration when it comes to water mitigation if your Hamilton Township home floods. That is why SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton needs to be your first call. Contact us today at (609) 965-0885 to get started.

How Does SERVPRO Decontaminate Homes with Flooding?

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

When floodwaters affect your home, you can trust our certified professionals to assist you every step of the way with water removal efforts.

Our Technicians Use Proprietary Cleaning Agents to Sanitize Brigantine Homes.

Storms can bring floodwaters raging through Brigantine. It does not have to be warmer weather for flooding to occur. Winter snow can cause flash flooding if it melts quickly enough. Natural disasters cause 90% of all flooding, and when that happens, it brings contaminated water into local homes.

How Does Flood Water Affect Homes?

Flood damage in Brigantine homes can cause all kinds of problems. Standing water leads to structural damage, contents get ruined, and health issues from contaminated water is a serious concern. Professional mitigation is required to clean, repair, and restore flood-damaged residences.

Decontamination is a Main Concern

Before the structural drying can begin, water extraction and sanitation must be mitigated. One of the immediate concerns is preventing the spread of microbes. We use EPA-registered proprietary cleaning agents to get rid of contaminants. These products are designed in-house by our chemists and are not available in stores. Our technicians use the following:

  • Antimicrobials
  • Biocides
  • Disinfectants
  • Sanitizers
  • Sporicides

With this powerful arsenal, technicians are able to prohibit microbe growth and their spread. Viricides and fungicides, part of the biocide group, mitigate help with microbial sanitary concerns. Disinfectants kill up to 99% of germs present. Sporicides are used for mold and sanitizers lower microbial levels to within acceptable ranges.

SERVPRO treats all contaminated surfaces with the correct cleaning agent. As the restoration process moves forward, surfaces are re-treated as necessary. Our technicians are certified in dealing with biohazards and mold. They are professionals who understand what needs to be done to mitigate flood damage. Contaminated Surfaces Present a Potential Problem for Atlantic City Businesses

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

Cleaning and sanitizing are both keys to helping stop the spread of viruses.

Preventative Cleaning and Disinfection in Atlantic City.

Recently, Atlantic City and the world have been rocked by a new, rapidly spreading coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that this pandemic will be slowed by social distancing and by effectively disinfecting touch points and surfaces.

In just under three months, the virus has spread from Wuhan, China to most countries of the world.  Atlantic City is particularly vulnerable to the virus because of its proximity to New York City, the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak.  While this disease’s effects are frightening enough, the illness is made even more chilling by the rapidity in which it has spread and the fact that there is no vaccine available to prevent it.

Experts at the CDC believe that indirect transmission of the virus from contaminated surfaces is a contributing factor. Their studies have suggested that, unlike common flu viruses that can survive outside the body for one-to-three days, the new virus could live up to nine days on surfaces.  It is for this reason that having potentially infected areas professionally cleaned and sanitized could significantly slow the spread of this disease.

SERVPRO can help by providing preventative cleaning and disinfection.  Over the years, SERVPRO has gained extensive experience in biohazard cleanup.  Our IICRC certified technicians follow CDC guidelines and use CDC and EPA approved disinfectants to thoroughly clean commercial properties, businesses and residential locations.

Help slow the spread of pathogens by having your location professionally cleaned.  Call SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton at 609-965-0885 for more detailed information about our services during this difficult time.

Advice from the medical and scientific community regarding how to deal with the coronavirus is based on present knowledge, which is subject to change as the situation continues to develop. There can be no assurance that disinfectants alone will be adequate to fully eliminate the virus. We are not physicians or infectious disease professionals. Consult your medical professionals for individual medical advice.

Why Professionals are Necessary to Clean Sewage Backups on Atlantic City

2/27/2020 (Permalink)

Our technicians are always on call to restore your home from water and fire damage, to biohazard cleanup.

Roots Allow Sewage Backup into Your Atlantic City Home

Nearly all of the homes here in Atlantic City run into a labyrinth of sanitary sewer pipes underground to the hub of the wastewater facility. Understanding the issues that you can have over the years with this service can prepare you for inevitable problems that might exist. Depending on the age of your house, you might have clay pipes that carry your waste to the tap in the main sewer line. This material is highly sensitive to the force of expanding roots in your yard.

In many situations, the minor breaking of your sewer line itself is not likely to cause sewage backup or a need for biohazard cleanup in your Atlantic City home. Roots that broke the terra cotta material for your service line can form balls in this drain that block solids from passing. Over even a brief period, these solids can dam up your service line until it overflows into your home after enough uses. The backup of sewage in your home is a significant hazard, as it immediately contaminates every surface in the affected room.

Addressing these concerns falls into the competent hands of our biohazard cleaning specialists. Our technicians receive training through both the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The training enables our technicians to approach the controlled demolition, extraction, drying, and content management of this area in a way that contains the threat from others in the house.

We utilize potent disinfectants and biocides to clean structural framework. This cleaning gives our in-house SERVPRO contractors a safe foundation to rebuild from moving forward. Also, these same contractors can help to repair the damaged portion of terra cotta (croc) pipe from the root threat or replace the service with more durable PVC upon your request.

Bio-threats like sewage can be a substantial concern for your home that demands immediate attention. SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team members can arrive quickly with experienced personnel to help. Contact usl today at (609) 965-0885.

Water Damage Incidents In Your Atlantic Property

2/8/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton at (609) 965-0885 to run the restoration cost-effectively.

Adequate Planning for Cost-Effective Resolution of Water Damage Incidents in Atlantic City

When called to a water damage site, SERVPRO seeks to accomplish various goals. Apart from resolving the problems caused by water intrusion in good time, we also aim to do it at an affordable cost for the benefit of the homeowner or the insurer.

We take various measures that help resolve water damage incidents in Atlantic City. Having a crew chief who oversees the entire restoration process, ensuring the quicker and more efficient conclusion of the restoration process is the primary aspect. Some of the issues the crew chief helps with include:

    •    Preparing the team for the exercise
    •    Creating a staging area at the loss site
    •    Supervising the technicians
    •    Documenting the loss

Adequate preparation helps a team perform restoration tasks cost-effectively. For instance, we know the right number of people to bring to the loss site because bringing more people would escalate the labor costs unnecessarily while bringing fewer numbers can lengthen the period it takes to restore the property. Taking longer than necessary can create an opportunity for secondary damages. Our SERVPRO crew chiefs make preparations based on the size of the property and estimates of spilled water, among other issues.

At the loss site, clutter can lead to time wastage and even accidents. Our SERVPRO crew chief supervises the technicians to create a staging area for the equipment, which reduces the trips they have to make to the production vehicle to collect tools. The crew chief also supervises the partial movement of contents within the property to protect them from secondary damage.

Documenting the loss also helps with cost-effectiveness.  Our teams take photos, moisture readings, and check material deterioration. By having a complete idea of what the loss involves, we can take steps that resolve all issues, thus avoiding follow up restoration in the future, which can build costs up unnecessarily.

Costs pile up easily when dealing with water damage. Call SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton at (609) 965-0885 to run the restoration cost-effectively. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Fire Damage In Your Atlantic City Home

We can make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Why SERVPRO is the Best Team to Call for Fire Damage in Atlantic City

Nobody likes to think of suffering the loss that comes from fire damage, but the possibility is always there. Instead of trying to take on the cleanup and restoration yourself, it is best to enlist the help of trained technicians that can get in and out in a timely fashion. Our experts at SERVPRO understand how critical timing can be, and we work fast to ensure that your household is on track to getting back to normal as quickly as possible.

When you have had a small fire, it could be tempting to start the cleanup on your own. However, fire damage in Atlantic City may not always be visible to the naked eye. There could be soot and smoke damage deep within various household belongings and materials, as well as hidden moisture from using water to extinguish the flames.

Why Call the Experts at SERVPRO?
Soot and smoke damage seeps into all areas of your home. This includes those that are far from the location of the fire. The residue floats through the air and coats surfaces. It is essential that this residue is eradicated before it has a chance to distort, etch, discolor, and disintegrate fabrics, drywall, wood, glass, metal, and other materials throughout the home. If your HVAC system was running at the time of the fire, the air is re-contaminated until the ducts are thoroughly cleaned.

SERVPRO technicians use methods approved by the Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and equipment for adequately treating and recovering all of the structures, contents, and systems throughout your home. The process for fire damage restoration begins from the moment that we arrive to reduce the harm caused by acidic soot and smoke. SERVPRO works room by room throughout your home to assess your need for cleanup, detecting residue, and locating moisture that could lead to harmful mold growth.

To eliminate foul odors throughout your home, SERVPRO deodorization experts execute odor eradication using specialized airborne sprays and thermal foggers as necessary. Every measure is taken to help neutralize all of the minuscule particles that carry smells that may otherwise linger in the home.

SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton is available whenever you need help with fire damage. Please give our team a call at (609) 965-0885 for all of your cleanup and restoration needs. We can make it, “Like it never even happened.”

Drying Saturated Carpets in Atlantic City Homes

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO help keep your carpets safe after a flood damage in Atlantic City.

Atlantic City SERVPRO knows best when it comes to your flood damage.

Many flooring types exist in your Atlantic City home, including ceramic tiling in the bathroom to water-resistant plank wood in the kitchen. Carpeting is also a material found in many spots in the house. When water loss incidents occur, this material is highly susceptible to absorption, which can be damaging in multiple ways. Whether regarding the cost of reinstallation of damaged carpets or the production of mold and microbial threats, our professionals can help.

Drying out saturated carpeting involves many of the tools available to our SERVPRO professionals for restoring water damage in Atlantic City residences. Whether standing water exists on the surface of the carpet or not, an extraction might still be the ideal place to begin. We can utilize attachments like the light wands that connect to our portable extractors and vacuums.

Light wands are ideal for instances where the padding beneath a layer of carpeting is already too saturated and potentially damaged to save. Protecting the carpet might be easier with the removal of subfloor padding that can hold moisture. Wands can address trapped water in the fibers of the carpeting with a direct suction of smaller areas beneath the extractor attachment.

The SERVPRO professionals dispatched to your address during the initial hours following the first notice of loss can also deploy specialized extraction tools for damp carpets. Weighted extractors come in two varieties, including self-propelled and stationary. Self-propelled units are often ride-on options that utilize the weight of the technician to force moisture to the surface for collection. The same premise applies to stationary extractors, as they also use the weight of the technician from one point to the next.

Drying efforts will prove ineffective without removing the trapped water in the flooring material. No matter how severe these water losses might become, our SERVPRO of Atlantic City / Hamilton / Hammonton team can help with a dedicated mitigation approach to save our customers time and money. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (609) 965-0885.

Older Homes in Atlantic City, NJ Area Have Higher Risk of Fire

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

Older Homes Are at Greater Risk of Having Fires

If your house is more than 40 years old, it can harbor some unseen fire risks. If you learn about them ahead of time, you can take action to prevent a fire from starting—and keep your home sweet home safe for many more years to come.

Outdated Wiring

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are about 46,000 fires involving home electrical systems each year, and the majority of those could be prevented with a routine inspection. The CPSC says that in many cases, homes that were built between 40 and 100 years ago hadn't been inspected since they were built.

Be alert to obvious warning signs of a failing electrical system:

  • flickering or dim lights
  • a shrinking of your television picture
  • frequent power outages
  • sparks
  • unusual sounds like sizzles or burning smells
  • smoke
  • any kind of electrical shock
  • damaged insulation
  • warm or hot outlets or switches
  • reliance on extension cords for everyday use

For Fire Restoration Needs Call SERVPRO of Atlantic City/Hamilton/Hammonton @ 609-965-0885

If you can't remember the last time your electrical system was inspected, hire a certified electrician or electrical inspector to prevent a potential disaster. Even if you've had an inspection less than a decade ago, you should contact a professional immediately if you start to notice the warning signs of a bad electrical system. Hire only a Licensed Electrician to do electrical work.

Balloon Framing

In newer homes, each floor is individually constructed to ensure that fire stops between them, but in balloon-frame homes, there's nothing to stop a fire from spreading. Commonly used from the late 1800s through about 1940, balloon framing was a construction method in which a continuous wood stud wall stretched all the way from the foundation of a home to the attic. If your home has balloon framing, flames can spread from the floor to the roof in just seconds.

If you aren’t sure what kind of framing your house has, hire a skilled professional to inspect it. If your home was constructed with balloon framing, a major remodel—to open up the walls and ceilings and install solid blocking to act as fire stops—may be your only option. Alternatively, you may be able to install insulation in empty cavities that would slow or prevent the spread of fire.
